Parkrun! Why you need to join in!
In this blog post, we'll explore the magic of Parkrun – a community-driven, inclusive movement that's not just about crossing the finish line but about embracing the journey, forging connections, and unleashing the joy of running.
What is Parkrun?
Parkrun is a free, weekly 5K run (or walk) that takes place in local parks around the world. Founded in 2004 on the principles of community, inclusivity, and well-being.
Parkrun events welcome people of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a complete novice, Parkrun offers a supportive environment for everyone. The organisation works on volunteers to deliver the events with marshals and trail walkers to support all participants.

Community Spirit and Connection
As you look around any Parkrun event, you can see camaraderie between all the participants. At the heart of Parkrun lies a vibrant and diverse community. Participants aren't just runners; they are friends, families, and neighbours coming together to share a common experience. These things make Parkrun more than just a physical activity – it's a social event where connections are formed and stories are shared.
To begin the event, a debriefing on health and safety is swiftly followed by the celebration of milestones and personal achievements. Whether it's your first Parkrun or your 100th, Parkrun events provide a platform to acknowledge and celebrate every participant's journey. The emphasis on personal improvement over competition creates an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity.
Parks are the backdrop
One of the best parts of these amazing events is the fact of running through scenic parks, breathing in fresh air, and soaking in the beauty of nature – that's the backdrop of a Parkrun event. The choice of venues adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience, encouraging participants to appreciate the outdoors and incorporate the joy of nature into their fitness journey.
Most of the events tend to have a nice quaint café to indulge in some tea and cakes with the opportunity to natter with other Park-runners. I have to say, I tend to see this as a reward for getting up and out of bed with some exercise ticked off the to do list! What a way to start the day!
Inclusivity and Accessibility
The great things about Parkrun is the ability to run the race your way. Don't be put off by some 'elite' runners, as they're just as supportive of everyone's individual cause.
Being open to people of all abilities and ages, Parkrun embraces the concept of "taking part" which is supported throughout the run by volunteers and supporters alike.
Volunteer-Powered Events
It wouldn't be right to talk about Parkrun without mentioning the dedicated Parkrun volunteers which make the event possible!
From setting up courses to cheering participants on, volunteers play a crucial role in creating a positive and uplifting atmosphere. Parkrun events aren't just about running; they're a collective effort to build a supportive and encouraging community.
In Conclusion...
A big thumbs up from me!
To put into a few words, Parkrun is an amazing opportunity to begin a fitness journey and track progress. Which is exactly how I'll be using it...
